WinField United agronomist talks mid-season nutrient management

The one nice thing about corn and soybeans is that they are oblivious to the world around them. They do not know if there are trade wars, global pandemics, their market value, or even how many of their cousins we already have sitting in storage. The only thing they do is grow, as long as they are provided with the right conditions and tools.

This is the time of year where we traditionally see the crops in need of some nutrients to properly grow and produce seed. Darrin Roberts is an agronomist with WinField United. He talks about the nutrient deficiencies that we are seeing in Iowa cornfields this year.

Roberts really emphasizes staying ahead of boron deficiencies. He says tassel time is a critical time for the corn to need boron. However, adding boron is a simple proposition.

On soybeans, Roberts says that the plants are switching gears in their growth stages. He talks about the nutrient needs the plants will have at this stage.

Roberts encourages producers to go out and scout fields for disease pressure. He says that producers should consider a fungicide application, even if there is no disease pressure. The benefits of fungicide go beyond disease treatment.
