As the economy tries to bring itself back from the COVID-19 pandemic, there are a lot of uncertainties still looming. This is especially true in the agriculture industry. Processing and the supply chain have all been affected, but production is still good.

The dairy industry looked to have a solid year in 2020. Before the pandemic, Tom Vilsack, now the U.S. Ag Secretary sat in my office and talked with me about the rosy future. However, the pandemic threw us all for a loop. Now, the dairy industry has to look at some warning signs as we make our way out of this situation.

Bryan Doherty is with Total Farm Marketing. He says good production is one of those warning signs.

As we emerge from the pandemic, the demand from the global marketplace will likely increase, but Doherty warns against the expansion of dairy production at this critical time.

The Coronavirus Food Assistance Program and others are helping with short-term support to producers, but those days are numbered as well.

Of course, nothing is set completely in stone. Doherty wants producers to be aware of the potentials, and make their plans accordingly.
