Using the PIC?800 to make the most of feed investments

The team at PIC spent time at the World Pork Expo last week meeting with producers who are looking for ways to cut feed costs.

With corn and soybean meal prices higher, many pig farmers are trying to make the most of their feed investments. Dan Hamilton is director of product performance at PIC. He tells the network that the PIC?800 is the ideal terminal sire for packers who want a Duroc with outstanding pork quality and leading primal yield, while providing producers the Duroc sire with the lowest production cost available.

?The PIC?800 is a Duroc boar,? said Hamilton. ?Today, that boar really meets what the market is looking for. It?s a fast growing, very robust pig. It has excellent feed efficiency and really good carcass quality and meat quality that the packers are really seeking today. There are other products that are in the same space, but it?s been tested over the last two years quite extensively. We?ve done large commercial research trials that have shown in six different trials that it is the leading product for cost of production and maximum efficiency and throughput. We have quite a competitive edge in terms of profitability per pig raised with that boar line.?

Hamilton says sire line genetics play a role by driving strong growth and feed efficiency ? both key factors for profitability. All PIC sire lines are selected based on the total economic value their market pigs will contribute to the pork production chain.

In addition to the six commercial trials, PIC?800 offspring also had competitive feed efficiency with a numerical advantage in four trials.

PIC (Pig Improvement Company) is the global leader in swine genetics. PIC provides genetically superior breeding stock to pig producers and supports with technical services to help them realize the genetic potential.
