USDA offers community grants to combat opioid use

The opioid crisis has reared its head in rural America. It first came to our attention in past months. Today, I talk with Timothy Helmbrecht, Acting State Director for USDA Rural Development in Iowa. Helmbrecht shares how USDA is giving assistance to rural communities.

Opioid use among farmers and other rural Americans has grown exponentially. Acting State Director of USDA Rural Development Timothy Helmbrecht tells us that 74% of farmers are affected and their troubles often start in the medicine cabinet.

USDA has announced new grant opportunities for communities in rural America to receive funding for ?brick and mortar? needs. Helmbrecht shares how the program works and gives some examples on how the grant can be used.
