Although many growers experienced harvest delays from wet weather and cool temperatures, both corn and soybean forecasts continue to be favorable, with soybeans projected to reach record high production for the State, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician of USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. The November Crop Report is based upon conditions, as of November 1, 2017. Some highlights of the report are as follows:

Indiana corn yield is expected to be 181 bushels per acre, up eight bushels from last year?s yield. Total production is expected to be 944.8 million bushels, down less than 1 percent from 2016. The Indiana corn crop was 59% harvested as of October 29, behind of the historical five-year average due to slower maturity and challenging harvest conditions.

Indiana soybean production is expected to total 326.7 million bushels, up 1 percent from a year earlier and, if realized, will be a new state record. The yield is forecast at 55 bushels per acre, down 2.5 bushels from the 2016 report. Soybeans harvested were at 80% as of October 29, on track with last year?s 81% and the five-year average of 80%, despite above average rainfall during harvest.

U.S. corn production is forecast at 14.6 billion bushels, down 4 percent from last year but up 2 percent from the October forecast. Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 175.4 bushels per acre, up 3.6 bushels from the October forecast and up 0.8 bushel from 2016. If realized, this will be the highest yield on record for the United States. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 83.1 million acres, unchanged from the previous estimate but down 4 percent from 2016.

U.S. soybean production is forecast at a record 4.43 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from October but up 3 percent from last year. Based on November 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 49.5 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month but down 2.5 bushels from last year. Area for harvest in the United States is forecast at a record high 89.5 million acres, unchanged from last month.
