We are in a competitive marketplace, make no mistake about it. No better example of this competition can be seen than in Japan. With the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in effect there, our competitors are getting very comfortable access to Japanese consumers. U.S. pork and beef must work to set themselves apart.

The FOODEX trade show was held in Tokyo. It gave many countries a chance to showcase their goods for consumers all across the globe, but Japan in particular. US Meat Export Federation?s (USMEF) Vice President of International Marketing Programs Greg Hanes says they showcased some great new foods at the event. One of these products is called the Idaho Finger Steak.

They also worked on showcasing new cooking methods for U.S. pork in traditional Japanese dishes.

Hanes says there was more of a competition feel because there are other countries who are taking advantage of their trade deals with Japan through the TPP. USMEF saw representation from new export markets and returning competitors.

The U.S. is scheduled to start talks with Japan on a bilateral trade deal later this month.
