Tips to improve nitrogen use efficiency

Nitrogen hit record prices in the fall of 2022 and though prices have dropped from those highs with the fine line of profitability for producers, managing nitrogen to optimize the return on investment is imperative.

Nitrogen is the most essential nutrient needed by crops of all types for plant growth and development. It also is one that can be tricky to manage since it can be lost into the environment, which is both an economic and environmental concern.

Carl Bruice the national nutrition technical manager with Wilbur-Ellis, explains nitrogen use efficiency.

As growers look for ways to get the most yield possible from their investment in nitrogen, Bruice says there are several factors to consider when improving nitrogen use efficiency.

Growers should determine when the crop needs nitrogen the most and attempt to apply that nitrogen shortly before peak crop demand.

Bruice says ensuring nitrogen is in the soil when the plant needs it most starts with assessing what the grower?s capabilities and limitations are.
