The importance of making plans for planting

As February approaches it?s still too cold with too much snow on the ground to get much work done outside. However, it is a great time to sit down and draft a plan of attack for planting season 2023.

Andrew Penney is a technical agronomist with Dekalb based in Iowa. He says that this time of year can help to improve a farmer?s management practices if that farmer takes time to craft a plan for the spring.

There has been a trend in recent years for growers to plant corn and soybeans earlier in the planting season. Penney says that clearly comes with risks, but not as many when planting soybeans.

Even if soil conditions and temperature are optimal for planting, Penney says that a farmer needs to be mindful of the next 7-10 days following planting.

The early days of a plant?s life are very important to plant health and Penney says that you do not want a plant in oversaturated conditions.

Penney says that he suggests a soybean seed treatment for sudden death syndrome for growers in Iowa.
