The importance of 3-modes of action to control weeds

Now that the corn and soybeans are up, crop maintenance begins. Most growers have gotten out those sprayers already. A Syngenta agronomic service represenative says using three modes of action is important to control weeds.

?Back in the time when we had foundation rates and we were only hitting [weeds] with one mode of action say Glyphosate, we are hitting with enough selection pressure that we?re selecting for that unique individual that is resistant to that herbicide type,? Dean Grossnickle, Agronomic Service Representative with Syngenta said.

If you spray a weed with more than one mode of action the odds of the weed overcoming two effective modes is reduced.

?The University of Illinois has done several studies looking at this concept. It is almost about 75% reduction in the chances of developing that herbicide resistance if you use multiple effective modes of actions.?

Grossnickle says if growers don?t use multiple modes, they will select for those individuals to become resistant regardless of what system they use. Syngenta hosted a Grow More Experience media day last Wednesday.
