Syngenta helping growers protect against SDS and SCN in 2022

As the 2021 harvest comes to a close, many growers are reflecting on the severity of diseases and pests like Sudden Death Syndrome and Soybean Cyst Nematode.

Jeff Ellis, agronomy service representative with Syngenta, explains the high pressure we saw from both of these yield threats in 2021 and how you can protect against them in 2022.

?SCN, soybean cyst nematode, it’s pretty well an every year thing, fields that have history with it are always going to have issues. Sometimes weather patterns do make it a bigger issue, especially during drier years, but it’s a pretty consistent problem in those problematic fields. SDS, generally fields do have history of that as well. Cool, wet weather at the time of planting really helps it get going. And that’s kind of what we had in ?21. When you think about soil borne pests, the soybean cyst nematode is by far the most problematic. SDS in certain areas can be a big issue as well, and they kind of have sort of a synergistic impact between the two of them. So, if you have SCN in the field, your soybean plants are under a lot of stress early on, it can lead to higher incidences of SDS. It’s not always necessary to have the soybean cyst nematode for SDS, but it certainly can make it a much more problematic issue if you have the two of them together and the environmental conditions for both to thrive.?

Ellis talks about some of the things growers can do to protect against SDS and SCN in 2022.

?They can do some crop rotation, but it has very little impact because soybean cyst nematodes, the cyst that they overwinter in, can live for quite a while. And SDS is the same way. And genetics is probably the other big part. There are cultivars of soybeans that do have some resistance. But I think the most important part of managing either pest is through seed treatments such as Saltro?, which has activity on both soybean cyst nematode and SDS. Saltro is the leading seed treatment. It’s a newer technology, provides much better control than a lot of the older chemistry, and when you compare it to another product in the market, such as ILEVO, you see a lot less stress put on the soybean plant from the Saltro, whereas ILEVO, you can see some issues, phyto issues and things like that as the soybean plants come up. And we consistently have seen least a four bushel increase in soybean yield1, with utilization of Saltro when you compare to side by sides with the ILEVO.?
