It?s not something that we want to hear about, especially with all the other setbacks we are facing. But we can also chalk this up as a bit of good news and a reminder to stay vigilant. A commercial turkey flock tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza, last week. However, quick reactions seemed to have eradicated the threat.

After initial testing was done at the Clemson Veterinary Diagnostic Center and confirmed at the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, it was up to quick thinking and reactions from lessons already learned.

South Carolina Ag Commissioner Hugh Weathers comments on what steps were taken.

There is no danger to the public. This is the first outbreak in the U.S. since 2017. Weathers credits their success to hard lessons learned in the Midwest in 2015.

While there have been no signs of the disease anywhere close to Iowa, it is still a good idea to keep monitoring your flocks for any signs or abnormalities. This incident in South Carolina proves that vigilance is the key to success.
