South American Weather and Crop Update (5-18-22)

Once again, the dry weather conditions in South America have both positive and negative consequences. The dryness is helping harvest progress move right along, but it is also creating some yield concerns in Brazil. Allendale commodity broker Greg McBride said that there?s also a chance for lower temperatures, which could cause some frost and freeze damage to Brazil?s safrinha corn crop.

McBride also provided a harvest progress update for Argentina.

Of course, the dry conditions are something to keep an eye on, but it?s normal for this time of year. McBride said it?s also important to keep track of Argentina?s harvest progress since they will immediately start to plant their winter wheat crop once the corn and beans are harvested.

Despite all of the issues we?ve talked about with Brazil?s safrinha corn crop this year, there?s still a lot of potential in it. McBride said they?re still looking at harvesting a record crop.

The dryness in South America also provides a bit of support to the U.S. markets. McBride said it?s still a good time for farmers to sell some old crop grains if they have any.
