Small but mighty dairy goat show on display at Adams County Fair

The Adams County Fair in Corning is winding down over the next couple of days.

The fair runs through Wednesday with a few more events and shows left on the schedule. A small group of kids took part in the dairy goat show Tuesday morning. Butch Sowers of Nevada, Iowa came down to serve as the superintendent of the dairy goat show. He says it was clear that the 4-H kids have been working hard to get ready for the county fair.

?They did a good job,? Sowers said. ?The animals were well taken care of, they were groomed well, and their hooves were taken care of. The goats had good nutrition as you could see the glow in their hair. We had good answers from the kids and children. It was a good show. Unfortunately, it was small.?

With the small dairy goat class, Sowers had some extra time in the show arena to talk with each 4-H member and provide some educational tips for future showing.

?I?ve tended to get that way at almost every show I go to, unless I?ve been there two or three times,? Sowers said. ?If we are not teaching the kids what their projects are about and how to do better, we are really fooling ourselves. I?ve got a good voice that carries without a microphone. I?m usually visiting the audience, parents, and the mentors. We?re learning the whole time I?m there evaluating the projects.?

Sowers does quite a bit of traveling around the state to cover livestock shows. Overall, he says he enjoyed his time in Corning this year.

?This is my first trip to Adams County,? Sowers said. ?Some people that show and live here have seen me at the state fair where I am a superintendent for the dairy goats up in Des Moines. They invited me to come down and it was a good trip. It was a good, small show with great quality, but they could use some more competition.?
