Rural residents can be targets of holiday scams too

We like to think we are isolated in the rural part of the country. When we think of scams, we tend to believe this is a problem in urban areas. Unfortunately, this is a dangerous belief to have. Scammers know no geographical region when being dishonest.

As the holiday season winds down, we need to be aware of the dangers facing cybersecurity. Many people may be doing their last-minute Christmas shopping online. AARP?s Sean Voskuhl says rural residents need to be vigilant at Christmas and throughout the year.

Many of us get caught up in the search to find the perfect gift. Often, this can lead us to a not so reputable site. If you are finding yourself on a website you are not familiar with, do some homework before handing over credit card and address information. You should also double check the links you follow from your email, these may not be taking you where you think you are going.

With the holidays comes the spirit of giving back. Voskuhl says to make sure you are giving your donations to reputable organizations and to be wary of solicitations for donations.

Remember to be vigilant all year round. It is the season of giving, just make sure you aren?t giving everything away.
