Plant your roots in Christ and let him be the foundation for your life. Be strong in your faith, just as you were taught. -Colossians 2:7

I hate yard work. I am the wife that doesn’t have flowers in the yard, or a garden, or anything to show for the land that my house sits on. I love flowers in a vase in my kitchen, but as far as tending to them… I would rather not.

In college, I was with a group of other college students helping an elderly couple do yard work. One of our biggest tasks of that afternoon was getting a tree uprooted so that they could eventually get a deck built in it’s place. I had never uprooted a trees roots before so I figured it wouldn’t take long. I assumed it would be easy, and I would be able to go back to my dorm and take a nap.

I was horribly wrong. It took us forever to work on getting the roots out of the ground. They would not budge. No matter how much we pushed, pulled, or shoveled. After a couple of hours of not making much headway we eventually had to leave. We never did get that tree uprooted for the couple.

That day it got me thinking about what I would be like if I was as rooted as the roots of that tree. If we as Christians were as rooted as that tree that day, nothing anyone tried would be able to budge us. We would be immovable. Are you as rooted as the roots of a tree? Friends, be rooted in Jesus today. Anything else you are clinging to won’t hold you in place.

Prayer: Lord, help me to be completely rooted in you. Help me to ground myself in you so deeply that things people, or the enemy do towards me will not matter. Be my foundation. In your name I pray, Amen.
