Romaine growers not happy with CDC?s broad reaction

Right before the biggest eating holiday of the year, we had a few issues which caused concerns for consumers. There were concerns over ground turkey, and right before Thanksgiving, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) alerted us to not eat any romaine lettuce. This broad stroke reaction has apparently irked some growers.

Florida State Representative and winter produce grower Rick Roth says the CDC went through vegetable producers like a buzz saw.

Roth says the CDC?s broad stroke approach is not good for farm economics. Roth calls on the CDC to do better investigations to pinpoint where tainted products could be originating.

Roth reminds consumers on how they can make sure their produce is safe.

The handling of this issue by the CDC comes at a time when livestock organizations are pushing for disease vaccination banks and creating contingencies if a disease is found in a remote area.
