Weed management is a difficult issue to tackle every year, and this year was no exception. With late plantings and hot, dry conditions, some farmers had an especially tough time trying to keep weed populations under control. Dean Grossnickle, technical development lead with Syngenta, said there were a variety of different issues across the state that contributed to the difficulty of weed management this year.

All growers know that weeds are problematic, but it feels like the weeds find new ways to surprise them every year. Grossnickle said the temperature spikes in late spring caused weeds like water hemp to germinate surprisingly early.

As producers plan ahead for 2023, Grossnickle said it?s important to have a proactive and robust weed management strategy.

All in all, Grossnickle said the best weed management strategy is to prevent them from maturing in the first place.
