Rep. Feenstra talks Cattle Price Discovery and Transparency Act

It?s tough to market any product, but, in recent years, it has become even more difficult for beef producers since they have to compete with the Big 4 meat packers. You just can?t expect the average producer to be able to keep up with huge, multi-million-dollar companies, especially when said companies distort the marketplace to increase their profits.

In an effort to level out the playing field, Iowa 4th District Congressman Randy Feenstra and 3rd District Congresswoman Cindy Axne introduced an updated Cattle Price Discovery and Transparency Act. Feenstra said the legislation aims to expose the Big 4?s price-fixing schemes and hold them accountable for their actions.

Vertical integration has been a huge detriment to cattle prices for the average beef producer. As these massive meat packers own more of the process, they gain more control over cattle prices. Feenstra said the marketplace needs more transparency, and this legislation provides just that.

We all know about the issues between the two political parties, but those don?t apply here. We all use animal products, so this is, by nature, a non-partisan issue. We?re all on the same side here. Feenstra said this is more than just a bipartisan effort- it?s a huge effort that?s been made possible through cooperation between the state and federal governments.

The legislation is currently making its way through the House and the Senate, so things are looking promising. However, one question remains- what will happen when it goes into effect? Feenstra talked about what this legislation means for the average Iowa beef producer.

Even with the increased transparency and leveled playing field, Iowa beef producers will still have to step up and market their cattle. Feenstra said the opportunity will be there, so producers need to go out and get it.

We all know that farmers are the most resilient workers in the world. No matter the obstacle, they will find a way to get their products out there and feed the world. Feenstra said he?s going to make sure they keep looking and fighting for ways to make that process easier.

In order for our elected officials to properly represent us, we need to make our voices heard. Feenstra said that farmers and producers need to be active- whether it?s through emails, phone calls, or other methods- in making sure their voices are heard by their representatives.
