Producers amused by first of its kind baler

Producers attending the 2018 KIIC Corn Belt Cow/Calf Conference this past weekend gazed at one of John Deere?s new product, the 0 Series Round Balers and Accumulators.

Austin Jones, of Ottumwa, Iowa, helped design John Deere?s 0 Series Round Balers. Jones says the new round balers feature a pre-cutter feed system which process hay before it gets into the bale, giving producers better feed quality. The pre-cutter feed system provides an added perk.

?We have a couple different features allowing the farmer to unplug the baler for the cab,? Jones said. ?If you do plug the pre-cutter feed system, we have a feature where, in the cab, you press a button and actuate a hydraulic lever. The lever will drop the floor which is the pan right below the cutting roter. The pan will fall out of the way and allow the slug to feed right up through and into the baler.?

No other company in the agricultural industry offers of 5-foot wide pre-cutter. However, farmers at the conference seemed to be intrigued by a different, but new feature: the accumulator.

?The accumulator, on the tail end of the baler, will allow you to haul two bales when you?re making a third and give you a chance to strategically drop those bales in the field where it makes the most sense to save time picking them up,? Jones said.

The 0 Series Round Balers and Accumulators will be available for the 2018 hay season. To learn more about these new products, visit https://www.deere.com/en/hay-forage/baling/.
