Pork sees record exports to South America

We have an abundant supply of pork which we need to move. The U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has been working with the pork industry to increase exports to new and growing markets. 2018 was a record year for pork exports to South America, and we don?t even have December?s numbers, yet.

This growth in South American exports was fueled by increased markets in Peru and Colombia. For pork muscle cuts only, exports to Colombia were up 39 percent to just over 83,000 mt, while the volume shipped to Peru climbed 40 percent to 5,240 mt.

USMEF?s Jessica Julca says Colombia is a very popular market for U.S. pork.

Meanwhile, in Peru, USMEF has worked to change the negative perception of pork as part of a healthy diet. Also, improvements in cold storage and distribution have made it easier for U.S. pork to move beyond the capital city of Lima.

The USMEF is continuing to improve export markets, as well as find new markets for U.S. red meat products.
