Pork Checkoff still working to prevent Foreign Animal Diseases

Much of our focus with the pork industry, lately, has been over the processing issues and the fallout from producers having to euthanize perfectly healthy animals. While that is an important topic to discuss, the fact that these hogs are still healthy is because of the work being done to combat the threat of foreign animal diseases. The Pork Checkoff remains committed to the task.

Dr. David Pyburn is the National Pork Board?s senior vice president of science and technology. He says African Swine Fever (ASF) remains a significant threat to hogs around the globe.

Even though it was not a foreign animal disease, the COVID-19 pandemic was a good litmus test for how the industry handles disruptions in the supply chain.

Pyburn says there are reliable ASF tests, but the quest for a vaccine continues.
