A national program is helping strengthen pork?s position in the marketplace by enhancing producers? knowledge of sow lifetime productivity.

The Pork Checkoff kicks-off its Animal Science Research Webinar Series on Tuesday, August 7. National Pork Board director of animal science Chris Hostetler says this year?s series focuses on sow health and performance, key topics under the Checkoff?s sow lifetime productivity research umbrella.

?Those research projects are starting to come to fruition, the results are out there and we?re beginning to present them,? Hostetler said. ?(…) pork producers supported the idea that in order to improve efficiency in sow herds, we need to talk about the lifetime productivity of those females and how we use particular strategies in gilt development, sow nutrition, sow health and animal management. How do we use those strategies to improve the number of pigs a sow weans from the time she enters to the time she leaves the herd??

Pork Checkoff webinars will be held every Tuesday, during the month of August, at 12 p.m. CT. The educational courses are free and all are encouraged to participate. Session topics can be found at www.pork.org. Interested participants can register online or call the Pork Checkoff Service Center at 800-456-PORK.
