Have you ever thought about what goes into products such as Pringles or Totino’s pizza rolls? These name brand items contain a healthy oil, which provides opportunities for both farmers and consumers.

Pioneer brand Plenish high oleic soybeans “offer farmers a value-added product to help meet demand and boost soybean market opportunities,” says Pioneer field agronomist John Schoenhals.

“Growers of Plenish high oleic soybeans see higher income potential per acre because of processor paid premiums, as the demand for this product increases,” Schoenhals says. “Across the U.S. this year, we’ve seen an average yield advantage of two-point-two bushels per acre. That two-point-two bushel advantage, with the premium factored in, equates to about a 48-dollar per acre income advantage across competitive soybeans, across the U.S.”

Travis and Marissa Hake, who farm in northwest Ohio, have grown Plenish high oleic soybeans for over a decade, and have been 100-percent Plenish soybeans for more than five years.

“We started growing them roughly ten years ago, and the reason we started was (for) the premium incentive,” Travis says. “It was desirable because it was a new thing, (and) it caught our eye. I was coming back from college, and on 1,000 to 1,500 acres of soybeans, it was another person’s salary.”

Pioneer sees increasing demand for Plenish high oleic soybeans. The Hakes look forward to building their business, all while meeting the demands of health-conscious consumers, food manufacturers, and food service operators.

“Our consumers are always looking for different options, or alternatives, and at the end of the day they’re looking for healthier products. Plenish is fitting that niche market of a healthy oil. I truly believe if soybeans as a commodity don’t step up and take that, there will be another product or commodity that will,” Marissa says.
