Perdue Saves the Day, Again

Earlier this year, Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, on his first day in office, saved the NAFTA agreement. Now he has done it again by coming to the rescue of the Korean Free Trade Agreement. According to U.S. news website Axios, Perdue was part of the briefing team last week that convinced President Donald Trump to reconsider withdrawing the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, known as KORUS. Axios reports that Trump?s withdrawal from KORUS was much more than a serious consideration, it was as close as it gets to a done deal, stalled by senior level staff who raised concerns that the President had not been fully briefed on the consequences of his decision. Perdue was joined by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary James Mattis who made a national security case against withdrawing from the agreement.

This was the second time Perdue stepped in and saved U.S. agriculture from a disastrous trade policy decision. Back in April, Perdue rushed to the White House when word leaked out the President was going to withdraw from NAFTA. Reportedly Perdue had a map of the U.S. and pointed out to the President all the major agricultural states that would be adversely affected by a withdrawal from NAFTA.
