The Page County Fair in Clarinda is in full swing this week.

Page County 4-H?ers were working hard during the sheep and goat shows, as well as the horse show Thursday morning. Like all county fairs in Iowa, the local ISU Extension Office helped coordinate and plan this year?s events. Page County Extension Director Kimberly Cavalier says the COVID-19 pandemic created challenges for the 2020 Page County Fair.

?I think anybody that has done anything this year has seen that it?s been different,? Cavalier said. ?However, you have a lot of wonderful people who really care about making this program successful. All of them have just pulled together, made some adjustments, and we?re wanting to go ahead and put on something for the kids. That?s what it?s all about. If we give them the opportunity to come here and showcase what they have been working on all year, that?s what we are here for.?

To help keep 4-H members, volunteers, judges and family members safe, social distancing was practiced throughout the fairgrounds and all livestock shows were conducted in a show and go fashion. Cavalier says the Page County Fair has a storied history, especially since Page County is considered the birthplace of 4-H.

?Jessie Field Shambaugh started the girls and boys clubs here in Page County,? Cavalier said. ?You go out to our museum and you can see a huge history of 4-H here in Page County. Everything we do 4-H related has a very long and proud history. You see the 4-H symbol all around and we?re very proud of that. It definitely reflects when you come out here and watch our shows at the fair every year.?

The 4-H club concept was adopted by Shambaugh in 1902, and 4-H still runs strong in Page County today.

Friday?s fair schedule was set to feature the poultry and rabbit shows, bucket and bottle calf shows, and the lamb and goat show. Saturday will include the 4-H dog and pet show followed by the beef show.
