Oil and ethanol groups meet in Des Moines to talk the future of fuel policy.

Members of the Renewable Fuels Association and the American Petroleum Institute discussed the Renewable Fuels Standard on a four-member panel Tuesday.

?We would like to see the RFS significantly reformed. It does not reflect the current market realities because of the increase in production of oil and natural gas over the past decade. Also, because the demand for oil has not been but the policy-makers thought it would be,? Frank Macchiarola, with the American Petroleum Institute says.

RFA Vice President of Government Affairs Samantha Slater disagrees.

?Don?t mess with the RFS is well-known and has been like that for some time. It has less than four and half years left before we approach 2022. We can have still had conversations about increasing consumer access and growing the market place moving forward but don?t mess with the RFS.?

Even though they have differences, both groups say they could work together moving forward.

Others on the panel included Donnell Rehagen with the National Biodiesel Board and the Michael McAdams with the Advanced Biofuels Association.

The panel discussion took place at the national energy conference in Des Moines.

The event was hosted by Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores of Iowa or PMCI.
