Today, the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) launched their ?Give-a-Ham? challenge. It is meant to bring a spotlight to the work the pork industry is doing not only to provide a safe and plentiful product but also how producers and industry members are giving back to their local communities and to those who are less fortunate.

Jen Sorenson is the President-Elect of the NPPC and an Iowa pork producer with Iowa Select Farms. She tells a little more about the ?Give-a-Ham? initiative.

This social media-based challenge uses the hashtag #GiveAHam. This is a way for the NPPC to track the movement and allow people to challenge one another to be a part of the initiative. This platform gave the NPPC great results last year as well. Sorenson says getting involved is very easy to do.

If anything positive came out of this year?s pandemic, it was the work of hog producers to find ways to manage the backlog of hogs and get pork products into the food system with the help of local lockers. This made it easy to get these food products into the hands of those dealing with food insecurities. Sorenson salutes the work of U.S. pork producers.
