The United States? top agriculture official will swear in another Under Secretary this evening.

United States Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue will swear in former Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey as Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agriculture Services (FFAS). Northey joins the USDA staff more than four months after being nominated for the post. He says he looks forward to working with Secretary Perdue in Washington, D.C.

?My interest in going to USDA has been because of those conversations I?ve had with Secretary Perdue, and the way he?s talked about how he wants to manage the U.S. Department of Agriculture,? Northey said. ?He?s someone who believes, like many Iowans, that we need to get out and talk to folks, and (the) government is supposed to focus on the people.”

Northey gives up what he calls ?a job of a lifetime? after eleven years.

“It?s a job that I have loved everyday,” Northey said. “Some days haven?t been easy, but I loved this job. We have a great agriculture in Iowa and should be very proud of it. It?s filled with great people, and I?ve gotten a chance to meet a lot of those great people.”
