The farm economy is in some tough times. It isn?t any laughing matter. There are threats of bankruptcies. Some producers are tightening their belts tighter than they ever imagined. The National Farmers? Union (NFU) is looking for relief.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue will meet with the Ag committees of both congressional houses, this week, to comment on the state of the rural economy. NFU President Roger Johnson says this is an opportunity to start a base of cooperation.

Johnson says Secretary Perdue needs to increase the strength of the farm safety net to provide producers with more certainty.

Johnson says getting the new Farm bill passed was just the first step.

The USDA is still taking comments on Farm Bill implementation.
