NCBA riding hard against “fake meat”

Although it seems far fetched to grow meat in a laboratory and sell it competitively within the traditional industry, there was a two day hearing last week in Washington where the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) both jockeyed for authority to regulate the new product.

The cattle industry is riding hard to get authority in the hands of the USDA, an agency they know well, in hopes that they will brand the product in their terms as “fake meat.”
