DES MOINES? Governors from across the country, local volunteers, volunteers with AmeriCorps, and volunteers from Volunteer Iowa came together in partnership with The Outreach Program to package 50,000 meals that were sent to the Food Bank of Iowa, during the National Governors Association?s 2016 Summer Meeting. Organizers and volunteers worked over four days to come together and help those in need.
?The National Governors Association is proud of the collaboration we created with The Outreach Program. We were able to help make a difference in the lives of those most in need,? said Utah Governor Gary Herbert, chair of the National Governors Association.
The Iowa-based Outreach Program strives to provide meals, quality water, and medical help to the nearly 870 million people worldwide who are unable to get those resources on their own.
?We are proud to work with Governors across the country this weekend to bring light to an important issue,? said Floyd Hammer, co-founder of The Outreach Program, ?this is truly a great cause and to have so many Governors come together in Iowa, was heartwarming.?
The Governors and a group volunteers from across the state worked closely to package meals that included the essential nutrients many people do not have access to on a daily basis. The 50,000 meals that were box over the weekend will provide piece of mind to families in Iowa.
?This was a great event and I?m proud to have been a part of it,? Iowa Governor Terry Branstad stated. ?As Governors, we came together to help our neighbors and we showed how important it is to battle an important issue, like food insecurity.?
