Motives Matter

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart. -Proverbs 21:2

motives2Have you ever caught yourself doing something so others can take notice?

You love leading worship just so others can see what a gift you have in singing.

You signed up for a missions trip so that people think you care about making disciples.

You gave someone a gift, hoping they will brag on social media about what a great friend you are.

You help someone with the stuff they just dropped so that people see that you’re being kind.

You put your name on your big tithe check, so the pastor knows just how much in abundance you’re giving.

You’re the first to pray in a group, so you can show the others how spiritual you are.

I think we all would be lying if we said that we haven’t done something to gain the recognition of others around us.

None of those things I mentioned are necessarily wrong, but they can end up being wrong.

A really scary truth is that God see’s past the things we do, and knows why we do them.

God cares about what you do, but He also cares about why you do it, motives matter!

Friend, take a step back. Why are you doing what you’re doing? Are you doing it because ultimately that’s your worship, sacrifice, surrender, and true heart?

Remember Jesus knows why, even if the people around you quite don’t.

Prayer: “God, thank you for caring what I do and why I do it. Help me to check my motives and find them to be in perfect alignment with you. In your name I pray, Amen.”
