Towards the end of May, we talked with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Executive Director from Iowa, Amanda De Jong, about the need for dairy producers to signup for the Margin Protection Program (MPP) by the June deadline. This call was going out across the nation.

Producers have heeded the call. USDA Undersecretary Bill Northey reported more than 20,000 producers have signed up and was he was expecting more to complete their signup by the June 8th deadline. In 2017, about 64 percent of the nation?s producers signed up for the program

Originally, USDA had set a June 1st deadline for the revised version of the program. The changes were an amendment which was part of the ?Tax Bill? and applied retroactively to the beginning of 2018, negating the fall 2017 signup.

Northey has said an estimated $19 million in checks have gone out to producers under the new program.

Again, the deadline to sign up is June 8th.
