ISU’s Dr. Anna Johnson is advancing distressed animal care

Taking care of injured or sick animals is something every livestock producer will face from time to time. Hogs are no different than any other animal, they just have a different set of needs. Dr. Anna Johnson of Iowa State University tells us about some of the work she is doing in helping find better practices for dealing with “distressed animals”.

Dr. Johnson says there is such a large push for improvements in animal welfare. She says the younger generation is really taking an interest in this field and advancing it forward.

Dr. Johnson says one area where advancements are being made is immediate care needs for a hog which has gone down. Johnson says there is a movement to a new tool on the farm.

Dr. Johnson says pork producers in Iowa are very much on the “cutting edge of animal welfare.”
