Using manure as a fertilizer source is as old as farming itself. Well, maybe not quite as old, but it did not take long to figure out. For as long as many of us can remember, livestock waste has been an excellent and natural source of nutrients for our various crops. As we close out October Pork Month, we talk about the ways that hogs are giving back to the row crop farmers in Iowa.

As harvest is wrapping up, farmers are looking at prepping their fields for the 2021 growing season. Fertilizers are a huge part of that preparation. Drew Mogler is the Public Policy Director for the Iowa Pork Producers Association. He talks about how fortunate Iowa farmers are to have a supply of natural fertilizer from the pork production in the state.

Using a fertilizer supply from livestock, such as hogs, is a benefit to the environment and to the fields. However, there are still guidelines for using the manure responsibly, and Mogler stresses that importance.

Mogler talks about the regulations for using hog manure as a fertilizer source. Many of them are centered around soil and water quality.

As we wrap up the monthly salute to the Iowa pork industry during Pork Month, Mogler talks about the plusses the year has had, especially in the export markets.
