Iowa?s Edgington ready to take reins at NCGA

Only a year after Iowa?s Kevin Ross stepped down from his year as the President of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), another Iowan is ready to take on the role. Chris Edgington farms over in Mitchell County. He stopped by our booth at the Farm Progress Show to talk about all things corn on a local and a national level.

Edgington talked about how things look at his Mitchell County farm. They have been very dry, and then suddenly they made up all their rain in one fell swoop. This led to a disaster declaration from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds.

Uncertainty from Mother Nature is something that farmers all over the world accept and know that some years it might just be their turn. However, uncertainty is not something they want to see in other places in the industry. One of those big reasons for uncertainty is proposals to remove the stepped-up basis.

As Edgington explains, farming is capital intensive. There is a lot of investment that needs to be made on assets that don?t generate income. However, they are a necessity to keep the business running.

When it comes to addressing these issues, it isn?t just a problem for corn growers. It is a problem for soybean growers, cattle & hog producers, fruits and vegetables, orchards, dairies, cotton growers, wool producers, and egg producers. All of agriculture will be affected, and it will take a coalition of all of agriculture to address these concerns.

Edgington assures corn growers across the country that he is ready for the challenges ahead as he takes over as President of the NCGA on October 1st.

Our full conversation with incoming NCGA President Chris Edgington will air on the September 11th edition of Weekend Ag Matters. You will hear his full remarks on these issues we mentioned and much more.
