The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released their report for egg production. Iowa remains the largest egg producer in the United States.
Iowa produced 1.31 billion eggs in April. According to statistics, this is a three percent dip in production from March, but a one percent increase from April 2017. Iowa accounted for approximately one-eighth of the nation’s egg production. Indiana was second with 756,300 eggs and Ohio was third with 717,000 eggs.
Iowa had 56.6 million laying hens in the state, three percent greater than last year, but down slightly from March. This number accounts for just under one-fifth of the nation’s laying hen population.
Just food for thought during National Egg Month.
