On January 18, the extended comment period for the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy ended. Iowans had 45 days to offer their thoughts on the document, with an additional two weeks added January 3.

In all, over a thousand comments were received, which IDALS Water Resources Engineer Dean Lemke says is a positive, regardless of their content.

But what’s the next step? Lemke says there’s a few. First the comments will be reviewed and sorted; viable ideas will be folded into the final document. Then the Department of Ag and Land Stewardship will fully move into implementation mode, which Lemke says is already partially underway.
