Iowa grain quality concerns: storage

We have talked about the challenges we may face in this year?s crop. Grain conditions may be quickly matured, wet, and small in both size and weight. What does this all mean for the storage of this grain? Dr. Charles Hurburgh of Iowa State University and I wrapped up our conversation talking about just that.

In our talk with Dr. Hurburgh, yesterday, he mentioned the possibility for low test weight corn. Identifying, drying, and moving this lighter corn is essential.

With the variability in this year?s grain being a distinct possibility, Dr. Hurburgh says achieving consistency will pay dividends. Trying to separate your corn by test weights instead of running it all together will help you reach this consistency.

Hurburgh reminds farmers that grain quality will not improve in storage. It can only degrade further. Paying attention at harvest will even out the quality issues we face in extended storage.

Dr. Hurburgh talks about the most important things to consider when storing this year?s crop.

Dr. Hurburgh says to pay close attention to your grain temperatures in the bin. Vigilance and maintaining a consistent temperature will be your best friend this storage season.
