Iowa dairy production increases in May

There is growth in Iowa?s milk production according to the United States Department of Agriculture?s (USDA) National Ag Statistics Service (NASS). The state?s production in the month of May was at 451 million pounds. This was a one percent increase over the previous May.

The number of dairy cows remained unchanged this month, at 220,000 head. However, it is an increase of 3,000 head from last year. The average monthly production per cow was down by 5 pounds, at 2,050 pounds.

The United States produced 17.9 billion pounds of milk in May. This was an increase of almost 1 percent from a year ago. There are 9.4 million head of dairy cattle across the U.S. This is an increase of 3,000 head since last May, and 2,000 more than in April.
