The second annual Animal Health in the Heartland takes place next month.

The event takes place July 18 and 19 in Ames. It?s hosted by the Iowa Biotech Association and Nebraska Life Sciences Association. Iowa Bio Executive Director Joe Hrdlicka says this year?s theme is ?Ensuring a Safe Food Supply?.

?I don?t think focus woke up this morning thinking about animal health but recent outbreaks in the poultry and swine industries have raised awareness. That is what this event is designed to do. It is go get folks in industry, government, research and academic research to talk about lessons learned and what is on the horizon.?

Hrdlicka says the symposium took a more specific approach last year. This year, the focus is broader.

?We?re excited Lt. Governor Adam Gregg will be joining us but Dr. John Schleifer is our first speaker. He is from Rembrandt Enterprises. They were hit very hard with avian influenza. He is going to talk about from start to finish how vaccines play an important role with these types of diseases.?

More speakers are scheduled to also talk about emerging diseases as well as an update from the USDA. The animal health event begins Tuesday afternoon July 18 with a tour of the National Center for Animal Health. The symposium begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Scheman Building at Iowa State Wednesday.
