The process of identifying farm animals in the United States has had a long and painful past. The first efforts were rejected by growers, who said it was not any of the government?s business.

The government, however, has made it their business to be able to trace livestock to limit the spread of disease. In the new farm bill, there is a major push to keep Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in check with funding of a vaccine bank. The other half of this effort is to identify any outbreak of a high risk disease and keep it from spreading.

Radio Oklahoma Ag Network farm director Ron Hays attended the 2018 Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting last week in Denver. Hays spoke with U.S. Department Agriculture (USDA) Undersecretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Greg Ibach, who shared his thoughts on how such a system might be implemented in the United States’ beef industry.
