Food and hunger are the topics of the week in Des Moines.

The Iowa Hunger Summit kicked off the week Monday and the World Food Prize?s Borlaug Dialogue begins Wednesday.

Randy Edeker is Hy-Vee?s President and CEO.

Edeker says they do a lot of things to help out with hunger in the local community.

?We gave 14 million pounds of food back this past year. We have a one step program that?s working through product sales to give back 350,000 meals back through that.?

He says this program is around three years old.

?It?s in it?s infancy because we didn?t want to promote it as a gimmick marketing program. We wanted to actually do good and have people discover that we?re doing good.?

Edeker adds it?s also important people know where their food comes from and not just the shelf in the grocery store.
