House Ag Committee reauthorizes CFTC

On Wednesday, the House Agriculture Committee passed H.R. 4895. This legislation will reauthorize the Commodity Futures Trading Commission through 2025. An Iowa representative was able to attach a bill on to protect whistleblowers of trade fraud and market manipulation.

House Ag Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-MN 7th) says this act was an important bipartisan measure that shows the Senate this isn?t about a political win or loss.

Former Committee Chairman and current Ranking Member Mike Conaway (R-TX 11th) had wanted to get this measure passed since the CFTC authorization lapsed in 2013.

Iowa Congresswoman Cindy Axne was able to attach the Whistleblower Programs Improvement Act. This bill would extend whistleblower protections to more individuals who report market manipulation, fraud, or other illegal activity to their supervisors.

The CFTC reauthorization was passed by voice vote and heads to the full House of Representatives.
