Hog nuisance lawsuits: Who’s next?

A federal jury on Friday awarded more than $470 million to six neighbors of a hog farm in Pender County, North Carolina who complained of excessive noise, odor, flies, buzzards and other disruptions to their quality of life.

The stunning verdict, reached after just three hours of deliberation, came against pork producer Murphy-Brown, and marked the third time juries have ruled against the company in a nuisance lawsuit.

The swine industry is asking, ?Who?s next?? The answer could be Iowa, as we have the largest number of hogs of any state, and there are long standing disputes between hog farms and those who live nearby and say the farm disrupts their quality of life.
