Growers need to keep their eyes on the finish line

There are many distractions out there facing the agriculture industry. Things that are being controlled by outside forces that we cannot affect. Whether it is trade, China, the pandemic, prices, or whatever; farmers can only control what they can control. As we head towards the grain-making stage of crop development, it is time to take stock of what you can control to bring your crops across the finish line as strong as they can be.

Tyler Smith is a Technical Sales Manager with the Mosaic Company, based out of Humboldt, Iowa. He talks about some of the concerns Iowa farmers need to address as they look at the mid-July crops. Iowa has had a mixed bag, depending on your location.

Smith says farmers need to be scouting their fields carefully. Iowa is going to be dealing with their usual suspects in the pest and disease departments. However, there are a few new challenges that producers may run into.

Smith says even though we are approaching the middle of July, it is not too early to be thinking about your fall fertilizer plans. Smith says you should be starting to have those discussions with your retailers and crop advisors already. This way you can start making your plan of attack for after harvest.

Smith says the better your communication is with your crop support team, the better positioned you will be for success come 2020 harvest and 2021 planting.
