Livestock is the first thing most people think of when they think of the Iowa State Fair, but it?s more than just cows and pigs. The are plenty of opportunities to show other agricultural products, and there?s no better place to see that than the floriculture show. Starting bright and early on the first day of the fair, FFA members from around the state bring in the best flowers from their gardens. Floriculture Superintendent Alan Spencer said the show gives kids an opportunity to show off the other side of agriculture.

Like every other part of agriculture, some things just can?t be controlled. This year really proved that- the drought conditions we?ve seen across the state have really had an impact on most people?s gardens. Spencer said they still had strong numbers despite the adverse weather conditions.

Any show like this provides a great opportunity to educate people about all sides of agriculture. Spencer said this floriculture show has been doing so for over 30 years.

Timing is especially critical for a flower show. Spencer said that exhibitors have to think carefully about when to plant their flowers to make sure they?re blooming just in time for the fair.

The winners of this year?s floriculture show will be announced at 4PM on Thursday. They will also be participating in the champion’s parade on Saturday.
