Farm Safety Week highlights need for vigilance

Earlier this week, I got a phone call that a friend?s husband was driving down the road, hit a bump, and dropped the corn head off the combine. The header dropped to the ground and the combine ramped over the head, and he was launched through the windshield and out onto the road. It is only by luck or a higher power that the combine did not run him over. He lived to tell about it. When I talked to him, he admitted that he had cut corners with his own safety for the sake of getting done faster. It almost cost him his life.

He will be the first to tell you to, please, do not be like him.

It is Farm Safety Week, and Matthew Brandt is the North American Agronomic System Lead for Bayer. He says it is important for all of us to keep safety top of mind. That could be when you are moving equipment from place to place.

Also, remember the dangers of grain bins.

Make sure that your family knows where you are always going to be. Also, do not be too stubborn to ask for help if you need it.

We do not want your name to be showing up on your local news, because of something that you could prevent. There are going to be things that are out of your control. That is why they are called ?accidents.? The Ag industry just wants farmers to be doing everything they can to take care of what they CAN control.

Be safe during this 2020 harvest season.
