And we?re off! The House and Senate Farm Bill conference committee met for the first time today, and we have some opening remarks for you.

The first meeting of the Farm Bill conference committee started with opening remarks from all the members. There was no hesitation to address the elephant in the room concerning the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), but there was also an underlying agreement that compromise must be reached for farmers. Senate Ag Committee Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) made this very clear.

Ranking Member of the House Ag Committee Collin Peterson (D-MN 7th) says the most important goal of the committee is getting the Farm Bill done.

Congressman David Scott (D-GA 13th) reminded the committee of the devastating effect uncertainty is having on farmers.

The committee has less than 10 legislative days to reach an agreement and get the Farm bill passed through both houses and on the President?s desk before the September 30th deadline.
