Depending on who you ask, animal agriculture is either adequately funded or neglected. Iowa State University Animal Science Chair Dr. Maynard Hogberg would fall into the latter camp. Hogberg is the Vice President of a newly formed lobbying organization, the National Association for the Advancement of Animal Science, whose leadership includes 12 heads of animal science from 12 land grant universities.

According to Hogberg, the U.S. is falling behind other countries in attention paid to researching animal agriculture.

Hogberg adds that the problem won’t go away for another 10-15 years, even if action is taken now, and as more immediate problems pop up, funding for animal ag research has been pushed out of the public eye.
